SWORD OF POWER: a workshop about paint blending for miniatures

This 90 minute virtual workshop will give you the POWER to create awesome blends on your miniatures using a variety of techniques. If you want to up your game when blending power swords or capes, or if the prospect of blending paint without the use of an airbrush feels daunting–then this workshop is for you.

The workshop requires that you have your own tools and paints. The demo painting will be done on a Space Marine Captain (specifically focusing on that power sword) using a suggested list of paints and tools, but you may use any miniature and tools that you prefer.

What the workshop will cover:

  • What is blending?

  • The properties of paints: opacity, mixtures, and pigment density

  • “Wet blending”

  • Glazing

  • Stippling

Total Time: 90 minutes

Format

This workshop will be facilitated inside of a private Google Meet call. Attendees will receive an invitation to the call prior to the start of the workshop.

The instructor will use high quality video to stream instruction and interact with attendees in real time, demonstrate the painting techniques described above, answer questions, and provide feedback to attendees.

Having your own webcam and/or microphone setup will allow you to interact with the instructor more effectively, but is not required. Google Meet also allows for attendees to to use their phone as a webcam and microphone.

Supplies

Participants must have their own supplies; these can be purchased from Waystone if you want to follow along exactly!

Required Supplies:

These are the minimum tools required to participate

  • An assembled and primed miniature with a base coat of color

  • Detail brush

  • Palette of your choice (wet palette, paper, or well palette can work)

  • A brush for stippling and base coating that you’re okay with abusing

  • A large, soft brush for drybrushing and stippling

  • A cup, mug, or small bucket for clean water (bigger the better)

  • Hobby paints

Suggested Supplies:

If you want to follow along exactly with the demonstration, these are the tools being used

  • Captain with Jump Pack (assembled with power sword, PRIMED, and with a base coat of Citadel Macragge Blue)

  • A wet palette

  • A detail brush - I will be using a daVinci Maestro sable #2

  • A drybrush. I will be using an Elf contour brush (yup, it’s a 70 cent makeup brush)

  • Spray bottle

  • Hair dryer

  • Flow improver

  • Citadel Color Paints: Abbadon Black, Mephiston Red, Flash Gitz Yellow, Nuln Oil, Macragge Blue, Cantor Blue, Calgar Blue

  • Vallejo Model Color White
